Red Sister by Mark Lawrence

Amazon / Goodreads

Fantasy Trilogy (Book 1 of 3)

What is it about?

People are starting to believe that the Chosen One has come to open the ark. To do so, a person has to “speak with all four voices” of the founders who led these people to their slowly dying planet. Each of the 4 tribes had unique characteristics: strength, speed, earth magic, path magic. Anyone who has enough of the ancestors blood in them will display some degree of these characteristics.

Nona has always been fast. And now that she’s been sold to the Convent of the Sweet Mercy, where young girls are “raised to be killers”, she needs to figure out what her part in the prophecy is going to be.

Was it good?

This was the last book I finished reading in 2018, and I accidentally stayed up until midnight the night before New Years trying to finish it.

The book might be over but I find my mind wandering frequently back into the world that Mark Lawrence created.

The story was really engaging and the world was very intriguing. I would have given this 5 stars except that I was too tired to make sense of the last fight scene and I was not surprised about who attacked Sister Thorn during the “future” scenes which hint at a greater coming conflict.

Also, Nona was a really awesome character but she could be really dense sometimes. (When she thought she was poisoned for so long, for example.)

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I hope that I do not have to wait long to jump back into this world.

    1. I know, and Holy Sister comes out soon. (I requested the ARC!) I’m just hesitant to pay $15 for a book when we are spending so much money to move to Texas. I’m afraid it’s going to have to wait until I find a library down there. 😦
