The Warrior’s Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold

Warriors Apprentice

Amazon | Goodreads

Audiobook Narrator: Grover Gardner

4/5 Mercenaries

What is it about?

This is book 2 (according to Goodreads. Amazon seems to think it’s book 4 and I am now thoroughly confused) in the Vorkosigan Saga. You do NOT need to have read book 1 in order to read this book. I enjoyed book 1, and you can find my review here.

Book 2 takes place nearly 20 years after book one and features a young man named Miles Vorkosigan. Due to an attack on his mother while she was pregnant with him, Miles is not as strong or large as your average Barryaran man. However, he is very clever. When he is not accepted to the military school due to his physical “deformity”, his ambition and cunning get him into serious trouble.

Was it good?

I very much enjoyed the telling of this story. Miles is a little too clever and it’s easy to believe how he ended up in over his head. I felt like the events were a natural progression from one crazy stunt to another. I was rooting for Miles the whole time; he was a really likable character.

The narrator in book 2 was the same as the original, and he did a great job. Miles is a funny character and the inflections and asides were done very well.
